Cross Country Checkup

After a couple of days of sponging off Jeff and Mati, we finally sold the house, were officially homeless and were on the road to Vancouver on the 15th of July. We stopped for lunch in Pembroke at my Aunt Lois and Uncle Neil's place and it was very nice to see them once again. An added bonus was that cousin Mark and family were there. After an extended catching up and a free lunch, we were back on the road and spent the night in Sudbury. The next day we stopped in Nairn Centre to visit my parents. It was good to stop and say hello - even if they didn't have a lot to say. I also showed Louise the three different places I lived in Nairn. One of them, Ritchie's Store is gone now as it burned to the ground last year. After that it was off to Spragge and Blind River to stop and see two other places I had lived in the past. With the reminiscing done, we then headed off to spend the night in Wawa. After that it was nights spent in Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Drumheller, Kelowna, Pentiction before we finally ended up in Vancouver on the 24th. What a large country we live in. Way too much beautiful scenery.

Freedom!!

11 July 2014

Today we spent the day moving the residue from the house into the storage shed. We rented a van from the U-Haul dealer in Russell and were certain it would take two trips and possibly a third to empty the house. It took one and after that it was time to clean. What fun!  This is where we now stand as far as belongings. One half empty storage shed, one car, and two bicycles. This is true freedom.

12 July 2014/12 juillet 2014

On Saturday we were off to Nicolet, Quebec to celebrate Helene Lavoie and Paul Caron's 25th wedding anniversary. It was a surprise party thrown by Paul's mother assisted by their friends. The surprise was complete and since Helene cried and Paul was a bit misty - the party was a success. Joining us were Louise's brother Paul, brother Bruno and wife Lucie, sister Suzanne and friend Francine Bouffard and her new squeeze Louis. The wine was free and freely distributed. I have no idea how much red wine I consumed but it was a lot. It was a good night out.

13 July 2014/13 juillet 2014

On Sunday, we were all invited to Hélène and Paul's place for breakfast and it ended up being brunch. It's a long process to cook breakfast when you have to tell stories and have a few laughs. It was apparent to me that Louise was having a blast talking to her siblings after many years not seeing them. They discussed family, places, and events in the past that I was not at all familiar with. They had a good time.

14 July 2014/14 juillet 2014

What a wonderful day. We signed the papers to hand over the house to the new owners. We received the cheque at 1715 hrs and immediately went to the bank and deposited it. When the teller asked if I wanted a receipt my answer was YES.  It is now official - we are homeless. Time to do a happy dance.

A fly in the ointment

Well we had hoped to close the sale of the house this coming Friday but due our lawyer needing to be in court at the same time, we now need to close next Monday. An extra few days before we are done. We had thought that we could perhaps do the paperwork on Thursday but their lawyer hasn't forwarded any paperwork over to our lawyer yet. Deep sigh...However, being retired has allowed us to adopt a zen outlook which will gets through this minor inconvenience.

Tomorrow evening we take the last of our food, dry goods and canned stuff over to the food bank and do the packing for our trip to BC. We will be taking care of my sister's cats for a few days at the end of July in Vancouver while she is working on business  in Toronto. It sounds like I'll be stressed by this gig - will probably require me to open a can or two of cat food and shovel out the litter box. Not enough to make me want to go back to work...

Mike

Last few days... Les dernières journées...

WOW! We are almost at the end of carting what's left of our belongings into storage. It's frustrating at times because you're always questionning yourself, "will I need that or not?" and then you get mad, you throw it out or give it to a second hand store. We rented a van for Friday to move the big items, and everything we own will fit in a 10x10 storage unit, and then it's freedoom of the road, I think...

WOW!

Louise

Slowly but surely...

After a few hectic weeks I (Mike) have finished clearing out of the military. It was all a bit surreal - after 36 years doing the same job it felt a little discombobulating to be finally cutting the chord. I guess this means I now need to grow up. The Sergeants Major arranged a send off for me on the 27th of June and it was very nice. Although I must say that I have changed as I have aged. Twenty five years ago I would have basked in all the praise I received - now it just makes me a little bit uncomfortable. Anyway, on the 30th of June I signed the last of my release papers and turned in my ID card to the 'very personable' young lady at Pass Control at NDHQ. Apparently a personality is still not required to work in security...

We are now in the last stages of emptying out the house and unloading the last of our possessions. Jeff and Matti bought the Mazda for their daughter and thus we are down to one car. We have never been able to say that before! We have culled our clothing and then culled once again. I had no idea I owned so many stylish t-shirts. We turn the house over to the lawyers on the 11th of July and with that we will be officially homeless. We will head off to BC to see family (that means you Chris, Luke, Rob, Deana, and Cathy! You have been warned.

We need to be in Toronto on the 25th of August to have our visa interviews at the Consulate of France. Louise and I will be interviewed individually to ensure that we aren't going to France to work and to verify we have enough money to live and are not criminals. Should be a marvellous time. With that Louise is looking for a place for us to hang our hat in Ottawa from the 27th of August to the 28th of September. She is checking out AirBNB and has a few leads so we should have something arranged in the next couple of days.

October will be spent in Quebec City and if everything pans out with the French Consulate, we will be in Carcassonne, France on 1 November.
